ICAN DataSwitch

DataSwitch is a Windows software solution that connects nodes (hardware sensors, users, and/or networks) and allows information to easily and efficiently flow from one node to another. It connects at least two nodes and chooses the best way to send each information packet based on its current understanding of the nodes. You configure DataSwitch to pass along certain pieces of information to certain nodes on a network. DataSwitch creates and maintains a table of all available nodes and the type of information they can receive or share.

ICAN has developed a modular and scalable DataSwitch solution that meets the needs of shore-based and vessel-based users. This ensures that you receive the features that best suit your unique needs. For shore-based networks, DataSwitch enables the flow of information from one or more isolated base stations to a Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) centre. Similarly, a VTS centre can send vital information to a regional headquarters, and then on to a national entity via another DataSwitch. For a vessel-based network, DataSwitch can send information from attached NMEA devices (sensors) to a number of stations on the vessel. The distribution of data (standard and proprietary messages) from one central location to shared locations, makes DataSwitch essential in many diverse environments.

DataSwitch performs a number of functions when data is passed into it; unlike hardware routers found on the internet that simply pass information from one network to another. DataSwitch can filter data as it is received, and does not necessarily forward all received information. Nodes are allowed to forward and/or accept messages on a case by case basis. Proprietary message handling capability allows ICAN to offer complete customization of DataSwitch to meet your specific needs.

The future of your network is dependant on the flow of information from all nodes (hardware sensors, users, and/or networks). DataSwitch provides a reliable flow of information to your environment that is flexible and highly configurable.

Users & Applications

There are many users for DataSwitch, both shore-based and vessel-based. DataSwitch can be used onboard commercial or paramilitary vessels to distribute data received from the vessel's attached NMEA devices (sensors) to the shipboard research laboratory, the ECDIS, the radar, or to other stations on board the vessel. Research vessels typically require the transfer of data to separate computers. The ability to collect and distribute this information is currently quite cumbersome. Data filtering capabilities allows these separate computer stations to concentrate on their area of interest or research.

VTS centres can collect, log, filter, and distribute NMEA data between multiple sources. DataSwitch is also invaluable in areas where the monitoring of marine traffic is quite geographically separate from the collection of data. National authorities can channel information from regional centres to one central location creating limitless monitoring capabilities.

As AIS networks expand, DataSwitch is an integral piece of software for VTS centres or any network requiring filtering, logging, and distribution of data.

Features and Functionality

DataSwitch allows multiple sources of standard and proprietary data to be collected, filtered, sorted, and securely redistributed according to defined rules and user rights. The distribution of all information relevant to various users adds a great deal of utility to existing networks. Networks can configure DataSwitch to accept or reject certain messages, and it can be configured to distribute information as it is needed by any network. Flexibility and configurability best describe DataSwitch.

DataSwitch is node based (hardware sensors, users, and/or networks) and provides a way to easily manage the stream of data between nodes. A node can be both a source and a destination for information. Two separate nodes, however, are required to transfer data. Currently, DataSwitch accepts NMEA 0183 sentences, but ICAN offers complete customization support for additional message formats, including proprietary messages. Sentences can be collected from several sources, including RS-232 serial ports, TCP ports, UDP ports, and from files on a computer’s hard drive. DataSwitch, for example, can be configured to gather data from a serial port and then send that information through TCP to several different users. This information can also be logged to a local log file.

Data is collected and then managed by creating a user list, with each node allowed to receive (or transfer) an allowable set of standard or proprietary sentences. In this way, each node can provide (or accept) various sentences. As an example, DataSwitch can be configured to read certain sentences from an RS-232 serial port. A user can then be configured to receive a (sub) set of the incoming sentences from the RS-232 serial port user.

To summarize: DataSwitch allows you to collect, filter, log, and distribute data to and from any connected node.

Seascape
Vessel Tracking Powered by DataSwitch

SeaScape turns any PC into a powerful AIS network viewer. A cost effective solution designed to view AIS information, SeaScape displays real time AIS information overlaid on electronic charts. You have full control over the display and can zoom, pan or change viewing locations.

SeaScape makes vessel tracking information available to you in your office at the push of a button. Knowing the exact location of each vessel enables you to effectively monitor and plan your operations.

This solution is designed for users that require a continuous display of AIS data over a network.

SeaScape WE
ICAN also offers a web edition of its SeaScape product. SeaScape WE is a browser-based display of real time AIS data that allows users to securely monitor vessel traffic. Administrators can set up user names and passwords so that users can log-in from anywhere in the world. Clients are connected through a public or private network so that all participants can view vessel traffic for the specified coverage areas. For easy chart loading and viewing, the Java application uses converted S-57 data as required.
